Why Active Play Matters for Kids Ages 3-5

Children ages 3-5 need to be active throughout the day. Being active helps kids stay healthy; sleep better; and build strong bones, hearts, and lungs. Physical activity also helps their brains develop and helps them maintain a healthy weight.

How to Encourage Active Play

  • Your child watches you and wants to be like you. When they see you being active, they learn it's important.
  • Find activities you both enjoy and play together.
  • Encourage outdoor play daily. Fresh air is good for kids.
  • Kids need both structured activities (like games with rules) and time to play however they want.
  • Set up playdates with other children to help increase movement and build social skills.

Different Activities to Try

Outdoor Fun

  • Blow bubbles and chase them.

  • Throw, catch, or kick a ball.

  • Draw with sidewalk chalk or play hopscotch.

  • Ride a bike, tricycle, or scooter.

  • Go for walks or nature hikes.

  • Play hide-and-seek.

  • Plant a garden together.

  • Visit the park.

Ways to Play Indoors

  • Make a marching band with wooden spoons and pots.

  • Have a dance party.

  • Play Simon Says, follow the leader, or duck-duck-goose.

  • Let your child help with chores (picking up toys, carrying laundry, setting the table, dusting).

  • Walk around a shopping mall or grocery store, where you can play I Spy.

Balancing Screen Time Can Help

Too much screen time can lead to weight gain, diabetes, and feeling sad or worried. According to NV 5-2-1-0, kids should spend 2 hours or less a day in front of a screen. Swap TV time for playing together.
