Active Play for Kids

Kids learn by watching you. Play with your child, and show them that it’s fun and important to be active.

Here are a few ways to get moving together:

  • Balance screen time.

Make sure screen time is balanced with sleep, play, learning, and time with family.

  • Play active games.

Try hide and seek, tag, Simon Says, or races in the backyard or park.

  • Go for walks or bike rides.

    Explore your neighborhood together.

  • Practice ball skills.

Throw, catch, or kick balls together.

  • Visit the park.

Let your child climb, swing, and play on the playground.

All bodies are different shapes and sizes. Help your child understand this is normal and healthy.

  • Let your child know you love them no matter what. Avoid talking about weight, dieting, or "good" and "bad" bodies. Focus on what their body can do, not how it looks.
  • Don't put young children on diets. Weight loss and dieting can harm a child's growth and create an unhealthy relationship with food.

If you're concerned about your child's weight, talk to their doctor or a WIC nutritionist. They can help you support your child's health without focusing on weight loss.
