Handling Pregnancy Aches and Pains

Your body is working hard to grow your baby. That can come with some uncomfortable moments. Many people feel sick to their stomach during the first three or four months.

When Nausea Strikes

"Morning sickness" can happen at any time of day. Here's what can help:

  • Open a window for fresh air.

  • Take your time getting up in the morning.

  • Stay away from smells that bother you.

  • Try cold foods if cooking smells make you feel sick.

  • Eat small amounts every hour or two.

  • Sip liquids slowly throughout the day.

Your body needs food and fluids, even when you feel queasy. If you can't keep anything down, call your health care provider.

Heartburn and Constipation

As your baby gets bigger, you might notice heartburn or constipation. These are totally normal parts of pregnancy.

If you have heartburn

  • Eat five or six small meals instead of three large ones.
  • Cut back on fried, greasy, spicy, or acidic foods.
  • Drink water with meals.
  • Take a walk after eating.
  • Avoid caffeine in soda, coffee, energy drinks, and tea.

If you’re constipated

  • Load up on fiber from foods like:
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • Beans and peas
    • Whole-grain cereals, hot or cold
    • Whole-wheat bread, crackers, or pasta
    • Brown rice
    • Corn tortillas
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days of the week.

Speak with your health care provider about what you're experiencing. Don't take any medicine unless they say it's okay.
